CLUB HISTORY

1968 saw the advent of the first Shoalhaven team. It consisted of young men, old men and those in between, but it was indeed a team. The Club’s four founders were Tim Johnston, John Phelps, Dr. W. P. (Bill) Ryan and Mr. B. Foster Emery.
From 1975 the club has maintained a 1st grade side and despite the odds has mostly fielded reserve and 3rd grade sides as well. By 1979 the Club was well established and Rugby “was now a big game in the Shoalhaven”.
In 1983 the Club had 6 teams entered in the Illawarra competition, namely the three senior teams, a fourth grade and two junior sides.
Shoalhaven Rugby Football Club continues to grow and has always been a place for players and their families to call home.

End of Season Tour

Media Release

Shoals Rugby Club will be traveling to Cambodia for the annual Rugby 10s competition to be hosted by Cambodia’s Northbridge International School, Phnom Penh. The touring party leaves on 24th October 2018 and returns on 31st October 2018.  The party consists of 14 players three coaches, Paul Connor, Paul Clements and Dale Spresser. The players have been fund raising for this trip during season 2018 and are looking forward to competing on the international stage.

The Cambodia 10s is in its 18th year and is organised by the Kampuchea Balopp group. This will be the first time an Australian team has competed in this tournament. The Men’s Competition runs over 2 days, Saturday 27th October and Sunday 28th October, and the tournament includes 4 team Women’s Competition and an Old Boys Competition on the Saturday. All in all a splenderific array of competitive 10s rugby.

Kamuchea Balopp is a youth development through sport initiative which works with disadvantaged and disable children. It is seeking donations of children’s equipment or uniforms, used rugby balls (which get recycled into wallets and pencil cases—a fine end to a rugby ball’s life) or any cash donations. On the Saturday afternoon there will be some youth KB games and tournament participants are asked to give these young rugby players enthusisastic support.

The tournament organisers have planned a fine social program with a Meet and Greet on Friday and an official Saturday evening 10s Party. On Sunday under the shady Northbridge trees there will be a BBQ where people can relax and watch the final of the Men’s tournament. It does seem that our Shoals’ travelers will be as busy as a cat’s tail in a room full of rocking chairs. We wish them a safe and happy trip as they visit one of the far flung outposts of the great rugby world.
